Process of Recovery

Once a target has been identified, a circular plug is carefully cut into the sod.
Once a target has been identified, a circular plug is carefully cut into the sod.

When a target has been located with the metal detector, a mental note is made of the location. In this case, it's the small leaf closer to the center of the picture.

A circular plug is then carefully cut into the grass with the digging tool, taking special care not to tear the edges

The plug is then removed from the ground, exposing what has been buried for years! Many times the target is visible at this point, but if it is not, a hand held pinpointer is used to narrow down the exact location.

Of course we dream of gold dubloons and treasure of every sort popping out at any minute, but in reality, more often than not, the target will be some manner of junk. In this case, its a pulltab. On the bright side, every piece of metallic junk that gets dug up is recycled, so maybe this little guy will be part of the next space shuttle!

Once the target has been recovered, and the dirt is filled back into the hole, the plug is replaced and smoothed out. Once complete, it is very difficult to tell that a hole was ever dug!

Research

Relics from the past can be found almost anywhere, and they often are. The most interesting ones however, are those that tell a small part of the story of the those that came before us. We live in an incredible time where a vast wealth of information is available to us with little effort. Utilising that information while combining it with modern metal detection technology is a valuable key to uncovering the treasures from the past that help tell those stories.

Many times, the search begins with an old map. Historic maps will give you a great start in determining the location and ownership of an older site. They generally include township, range, and section numbers that are very helpful in matching the historic map to modern ones.

Most county government websites will have a GIS section that can be used to determine current property lines and ownership as well as township, range, and section markers that allow for overlay on historic maps. This is very helpful since the roads are generally in slightly different locations and layouts than they were 150 years ago.

Historic aerial photos can be very handy in determining the exact location of a historic structure. Occasionally, they will show other features as well, such as swimming holes, orchards and otherwise unlisted structures.

Metal Detecting Services

I vividly remember the first time I saw a metal detector. I was 12 years old and my mother had insisted on dragging us to a family reunion at a remote park. As I sat munching potato chips and trying to avoid making eye contact with the strange relatives that i didn't know, a saw my uncle Charles pacing around with a strange machine and a small trowel in his hand. I finished the last of my chips and as I made my way over to him. The machine made a noise. He knelt down and began digging a small hole in the ground. Just as I knelt down beside him, out of the hole popped an old penny. Right then and there I was hooked on metal detecting, and have been ever since.

Ring Finding Service

As exciting as it is to find an old coin, toy truck or even a Civil War bullet, there is nothing more rewarding than helping someone find something personally precious once lost to the earth. Unfortunately, the most commonly lost item of value is the ring. Wedding rings, school rings, and the like have more than a monetary worth. They represent a part of who we are. As a member of Ring Finders, nothing could bring me more joy than to assist you in reclaiming your lost personal treasure. Contact me for more details and to schedule a recovery.
